Under the golden Thai sun, beachgoers — both men and women — relax on rustic wooden chairs at Pig Island in Koh Samui. Laughter fills the air as they soak up the tropical vibes, sip on refreshing drinks, and watch the gentle waves kiss the sandy shore. Some are lost in conversation, while others enjoy the company of the friendly island pigs wandering nearby. It’s the perfect scene of island bliss, where fun and relaxation go hand in hand

My husband and I recently took on this adventure to visit our Austrian friends who were vacationing on the island. If you’re considering a road trip to Koh Samui, here’s everything you need to know to ensure a smooth journey.

The Route: Johor to Koh Samui

We set off from Johor Bahru early on a Thursday morning in December 2024, driving our Malaysian-plated car towards Hat Yai — our first stop before heading to Koh Samui.

Toll Fees & Road Conditions in Malaysia and Thailand

Driving through Malaysia, we encountered eight toll stations, so having either a Touch ’n Go card or MyRFID is essential. We paid a total of RM178 (approx. USD 30.50) in toll fees before reaching the Sadao Border in Thailand.
